I am a mandatory reporter……..and you should be too.

UPDATE:  This morning, 4/7/13 it happened again and I had to call LAPD and CPS (child protective services).  I’m very disturbed and sad to think that a child just above me is unsafe in his own home.  It breaks my heart to think that since July it’s been going on and this was the first time I called the authorities, but it’s been lower key and less often. AND CPS isn’t always the best outcome. I don’t know if this family is indeed a family. I don’t know if they’re here legally. I don’t know anything.  LAPD asked if I knew if he went to school. I truly don’t know. But I do know that I can’t sit here all day worrying, so I know I did the right thing.

I don’t know that I’ll ever know the outcome unless they just disappear or I hear something happen. But if I do, I will update again.  I just pray that the child is okay and that whatever is going on gets dealt with immediately.

Original Post from 7/16/12:

This post needs no introduction. Below is the letter I just had to leave on my neighbors door.  It’s bothered me all day today. The child is between 7 – 9 years old and seems to CRAVE attention whenever we pass in the garage or elevator.  I was very close to calling 911 this morning it was so bad and he carried on for so long.  I AM A NANNY. I KNOW WHAT NORMAL KID NOISE AND TEMPER TANTRUMS SOUND LIKE. This was not normal. Nor typical.

I decided after thinking it over all day today that I would put this note on their door tonight. Warning them.   I am a mandatory reporter of child abuse in the state of California because I am a licensed childcare provider, but in life, WE ALL NEED TO BE MANDATORY REPORTERS. Don’t stand by and allow a child or anyone to be abused or treated improperly.  I don’t know these people nor do I want to. I just need to know their child is safe to be able to look myself in the mirror and know I have done everything I possibly could to keep him (and any others) safe.  Please, I urge you to do the same. Don’t ever just stand idly by.

To The Tenants in Unit 205:

After being awakened today by the screaming of your school aged child at 8:10am until almost 9am today, July 16, 2012, I am writing you this letter to forewarn you that the next time I hear him carrying on like that I WILL be calling and reporting to CPS (the department of child protective services).

You live in a condominium complex and the walls are not that thick.  I could hear him screaming, I could hear what he was saying, I could hear him stomping and throwing his body.  For his safety and my conscience the next time I hear such an episode I WILL be calling and placing a report. I am a mandatory reporter of child abuse in the state of California and when hearing a child of his age carrying on for that length of time one begins to be concerned for his safety and well being.

I know children can be difficult when they don’t get their way, so I recommend remembering you live in a community where everyone can hear your business before allowing him to carry on for that length of time again.  If he was an infant or a toddler that would be different, he is a school aged child able to talk and communicate.

I do not wish to embarrass you, and I do not wish to cause you any problems but what I heard this morning did not sound normal nor make me feel comfortable that he is safe.

Please take whatever steps necessary to ensure that this DOES NOT happen again anytime soon.

Thank you,

Anonymous Neighbor

  1. More people need to be like you. I’m sure others would’ve thought it was a kid just acting up and being spoiled. Since you’re around children all day, you can tell the difference. Glad you stood up for the little boy and have promised to help should something occur again. xx

Thank you Kourtney!!! That’s why I chose to share this story. Sometimes awareness and a reminder help people be more vigilant.
